With an XC api, do you have to tell your provider when swapping boxes? Only in a thread I read, said you can use XC multiple times, but on different boxes?

No.  In most cases you do not need to.

There are options available to resellers on the panel to lock XC subs to various stuff like ISP, IP, Country, user agents reported by box, etc...  They are rarely used unless some account is being hacked.

I have my same XC account installed on at least 10 different boxes, and no issues.  That is very convenient.  As long as i don't go over my number of simultaneous active streams, it does not matter how many boxes it is installed on.
